When intense rain falls on a roof, the water does not reach every part of the gutter system evenly. Roof pitch, valleys, surface area, dormers, transitions, and different roof sections can all concentrate runoff into specific locations.

That is why drainage performance cannot be judged only by whether a home has gutters. The system also needs enough capacity, appropriate pitch, sufficient outlets, and downspouts positioned where concentrated roof runoff can be moved efficiently.
